Drawing Like A Kid – An Rx For Healing
I recently took an inspiring workshop by Lewis Rossignol via the amazing Carla Sonheim website. Lewis is a great teacher and everyone really got into the spirit of child-like drawing. For me, it was permission to loosen up and create art in a more simple way. But what surprised me and no doubt, others, was just how powerful the class turned out to be. Participants reached back into their childhoods, and while many uncovered forgotten happy moments from being a kid, others tapped into difficult life experiences still raw after many years in adulthood. And yet, they kept going, brave in both their art-making and their sharing. I just wanted to hug them all.
Over the years, art has saved me many times when it seemed too hard to express emotion with words. Yes, it can be fun, joyful and magical. But it can also be the best medicine in the world.
NOTE: This was one of my kitchen drawings done in the class. Kitchens hold such a special place in my memories as so much of life happens there.
