My Latest Creative Project!

I'm completely captivated by what I've learned about Kawandi, (the word for quilt), a tradition filled with soul that originates with the Siddi people, Indians of African descent who came to India as slaves, merchants, soldiers, administrators, or sailors, centuries ago.

Handcrafted with love, Kawandi are sewn together from the outside in, creating a beautiful border effect.  The stitching often runs across the quilt in a circular or spiral motion and bold colors and patterns are used frequently.

Kawandi are made from scraps of fabric, repurposed from old clothes or leftover materials, reflecting a visual diary of a family’s life and highlighting the skill, talent, and creative gifts of the women who make them. The finishing touch to a Kawandi is a few grains of rice placed under the final patch in the center of the piece as a blessing for abundance.

For the women who create these quilts, making a Kawandi is not just a craft but a spiritual practice - a form of meditation that allows the quilter to focus, reflect, and connect with their deepest selves.

I’m eager to begin the journey of my own Kawandi and will keep you posted on my progress!
