Everyone Belongs
This latest Kawandi -style work grew from a basket of fabric where every scrap seemed to be saying, “Pick me! Pick me! So many patterns, so many colors, each remnant offering its own bit of history. And when I put them together, one stitch at a time, I got what the piece was trying to tell me…that everyone belonged. They didn’t compete. They didn’t jockey for position. In community, they just naturally supported and enhanced each other.
At my age, the everyday meaning of Community has become more and more important to me. Neighbors. Friends. Strangers who wave. The ways we show up for each other, imperfectly at times, but still able to create something warm and welcoming together. We yearn for it. We’re comforted by it. We need it more than ever.
So it seems fitting to call this piece Everyone Belongs. Not because it sounds nice—but because it feels true.
