Persist
I’m continuing to spend hours in my sunroom stitching away with a cache of well-worn fabrics, just letting my hand and heart guide me. Over and over, I’ve been playing music which honors the Buddhist monks and their precious dog, Aloka, who walked from Texas to Washington DC in the name of peace.
What came out of this time was a new work called “Persist.” Creating her has taught me four things I want to share. First, the definition of her name - continuing firmly in a course of action despite difficulty or opposition. Second – that it’s absolutely possible to feel angry and sad while also experiencing a gut-level sense of pride that we, the people, persist. Third, I am who I am and make no apologies. And finally, despite the chaos swirling around us on a daily basis, I trust in myself and others to stay the course – each step an act of faith, to be sure.
There is so much at stake - truth, respect, kindness and compassion - but I have to believe we can do this together.
